They DO have detachable mags. Since the M1A does not have a pistol grip, it is legal to have detachable mags. The law states any centerfire firearm can only have 2 of the following “assault weapon” features: a pistol grip a detachable mag a flash suppressor a collapsable stock a bayonet lug is semi auto The M1A has the det mag and is semi auto, so it has 2 points and, thus is legal for sale. The AR is DQ’ed by the pistol grip (3 points). The AR’s legal in CA have a fixed mag which drops it back to 2 points.
