Does the body absorb calcium carbonate better than other forms of calcium?
When you are looking for a calcium supplement you need to read how much elemental calcium it provides. A supplement with 500mg. of Calcium carbonate that contains 200mg. of elemental calcium will provide only 200mg. of calcium. Calcium is best absorbed in an acid environment so calcium carbonate requires extra stomach acid for best absorption such as after a meal or with a glass of an acidic juice. Since it is the most common supplement and since the elemental calcium content is higher than say with calcium citrate, you may not need to take as many pills to achieve the recommended 1500mg of daily intake. The other calcium often seen is calcium citrate which is acid based, so it can be taken any time of day even on an empty stomach, but which usually supplies less elemental calcium per pill. So with calcium citrate you made need to take more tablets. Coral calcium is just another form of calcium carbonate and is no better absorbed than regular calcium carbonate. Other odd ball calciun s
