Does the Board require that a RN be certified in order to administer intravenous (IV) chemotherapy?

The appropriately prepared Registered Nurse may administer IV chemotherapeutic agents. The Board of nursing does not require “certification” as a pre-requisite for the nurse to provide education regarding chemotherapy or as a pre-requisite to providing care to chemotherapy patients. According to the Mississippi Nursing Practice Law, Rules and Regulations, the nurse shall be held accountable for the quality of nursing care given to patients and failure to maintain competency or accepting an assignment in which a nurse is not competent may be grounds for disciplinary action against the nurses license. The nurse is responsible to assure that he/she is trained and competent to do the procedure or administer the medication prior to accepting such a task.
