Does the Bible really list seven deadly sins?
The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a classification of the most objectionable vices that were originally used in early Catholic Church teachings to educate and instruct followers concerning mankind’s sinfulness. They are: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride. Sin is understood as ‘missing the mark with God,’ and the Bible reminds us that, ‘all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,’ Romans chapter three verse 23. Although there is no place in the Bible where a specific list of the seven deadly sins is given, there are lists of virtues contrasted with lists of sins found in certain books of the New Testament, such as the Epistle to the Galatians, chapter five verses 19 to 23.
