Does the Bible condemn gambling?
A statement was recently made on a television program about gambling that caught my attention. A man who was cheating a casino attempted to justify his actions by claiming that the Bible did not condemn gambling. Is he right? What does the Bible say about gambling? It may surprise some to learn that the word gambling does not appear in the Bible. This may be why this man reached his conclusion. However, just because the word is not found in the Bible does not automatically mean that the activity is not condemned. The Bible is more than a list of thou shalt not’s . It also contains principles of holiness and righteousness and admonishes us to follow them. For instance, you can’t find the word abortion in the Bible, yet few people in Jackson County would deny that it is a sin. We understand it is wrong because it violates Biblical principles concerning murder and the sanctity of human life. Gambling is condemned in the same way.
