Does the battery recharge when pedalling or freewheeling?

Although the electric motor does recharge the battery the benefit is negligible. You would have to cycle or freewheel miles against the resistance of the motor to achieve even a few metres of extra range. This regenerative effect is achieved purely because motors and generators share similar physical properties and so should not be considered a design feature. The advantage though is that you do preserve the battery significantly by pedalling.
