Does the Australian Defence force have an aircraft carrier?
The RAN does not currently have an aircraft carrier in service. The last Australian aircraft carrier was HMAS Melbourne and was decommissioned on 30th June 1982, it was subsequently sold as scrap to the Chinese. The RAN has proposals for new vessels to join the RAN, by way of HMAS Adelaide and HMAS Canberra, which are due for service in approximately 2012 and 2015 respectively, however their ability of being equipped to carry aircraft is yet to be confirmed or denied. Is it possible to reopen the case and look into the archives after 100 years?
