Does the Atlantic Coast Conference have different admissions standards than the NCAA?
Dick Baddour: It’s important to say at the outset that admissions decisions at the University of North Carolina rest with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The athletics department makes recommendations to the admissions office, but they make the decision. A fundamental principle of the ACC and the NCAA is each institution is responsible for its own admissions decisions. Neither the NCAA nor the ACC governs admissions, but both govern who can participate in intercollegiate athletics. The NCAA has an established set of standards. While the NCAA does not limit partial or non-qualifiers, the ACC sets a limit on the number of partial qualifiers allowed and does not allow non-qualifiers. THM: What are non-qualifiers and partial qualifiers? DB: The NCAA established a sliding scale which balances high school grade point average and standardized test score, whether it be the SAT or ACT. The higher a person’s GPA, the lower the SAT score can be, and vice versa, as long as it stays within
