Does the A1c test diagnose diabetes?
In addition to screening for diabetes and pre-diabetes, the A1c test is the most widely recommended test to manage diabetes, assess glucose control, or to assess the risk of developing diabetes-related complications. A growing base of medical literature indicates that the A1c test can help predict whether you will develop diabetes in the future. To diagnose diabetes, health care professionals may perform a blood sugar check during an office visit to look for high elevations of glucose. If the blood sugar check is normal, but the physician still suspects a problem, he or she may require a fasting glucose test or an oral glucose tolerance test. The Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) test is the most widely recommended test to help diagnose diabetes.
