Does the 2001 Convention change the scope of the jurisdiction of States or the definition of maritime zones?
No. The 2001 Convention does neither intend to change the definition nor the boundaries of maritime zones defined in other treaties, including UNCLOS, nor the jurisdiction and sovereignty rights of States. If a State has agreements with its neighbour States regulating jurisdiction in certain areas, gulfs or streets, they are not modified by the 2001 Convention. The Convention does not include definitions of the terms “Territorial Sea”, “Exclusive Economic Zone” or “Contiguous Zone”, because it respects the existing delimitations.
