Does taking birth control pills lower the risk of ovarian cancer?
The risk of ovarian cancer is related to the number of times a woman ovulates. Since birth control pills stop ovulation, it makes sense that ovarian cancer risk is reduced by taking birth control pills. In fact, studies have shown that taking oral contraceptives for 5 years or more has been found to reduce risk of ovarian cancer. The risk reduction is a benefit that continues even after one stops taking oral contraceptives.
