Does swimming burn more calories than…..?
Depending on how hard you work in the pool, running tends to burn more than swimming, and swimming more than most cardio machines. Swimming will tone your muscles technically, but it also keeps them longer and leaner, so you don’t get the same “toned look” you get from weights, which gets better definition than swimming does. Thus, swimming is good for both calorie burn and toning, but it depends on how much definition you want from your exercise, as you’ll get less obvious definition from swimming than you will from out of water activites. Prime example is Michael Phelps- (did it just get warm in here?? 😉 ) he’s toned and you can tell he’s got loads of muscle, but he’s not body builder toned. PS: Swimming does pose the risk of injury- my right shoulder and surgery record can attest to that- you just don’t get the same types of injuries you’d come across in running or lifting.
