Does substitute judge training count?
Yes. Attorneys seeking to maintain their certification as substitute judges must view several hours of video training covering criminal practice in Virginia’s circuit, general district criminal and juvenile and domestic relations courts. Because of the frequency of the training and the number of training hours required to complete the substitute judges’ training, attorneys completing this course are not required to complete additional certification training for misdemeanor, felony or juvenile certification. Substitute judge training does not, however, automatically qualify for re-certification credit to remain eligible for capital appointments. Attorneys serving as substitute judges must indicate on their certification/re-certification forms the total number of training hours they received.
