Does Sports Massage hurt?
YES and NO. Sports massage can be painful, especially in areas of soft tissue that hurt you during or after your activity. But every muscle in your body should not hurt during every part of your massage. We want your massage to be enjoyable as well as helpful. Sometimes we need to alleviate a trigger point by applying deep, precise pressure on it. But for the majority of your massage, we aim for a pressure that “hurts good”. This type of pressure is deep and the affects are greater and last longer than a relaxation massage may last. Just because an area where we work may hurt, does not mean we are causing the pain. We are well-trained to avoid areas where deep pressure can damage tissues. Most of all, WE LISTEN TO YOU! We are here to help and if you need us to lighten up, just say so. Your body is our business and YOU are the BOSS!
Sports massage can be a little uncomfortable, but it is only ever a ‘good’ pain and you generally feel the release of tension that this brings almost immediately. You are the only judge of how you feel, and our Sports Massage is very much interactive, placing you in the driving seat and dictating how we proceed if you become too uncomfortable. Sometimes clients tell us about going for a massage treatment using different approaches or styles and found it unsatisfactory as it was too light and didn’’t get to the route of the problem. There is always a place for this type of massage, however in order to gain the results quickly, we find that our form of Sports Massage is what our clients request more often. As we have previously said however, you are in charge of how light you would like the massage and we will always aim to provide the massage you are expecting and request. You may feel a little post massage soreness for 24- 48 hours after a Sports Massage. This is normal and demonstrate
Some forms of massage are very superficial and can be very relaxing. A sports massage is generally applied deeper to manipulate muscle tissue more effectively. This can induce a deeper relaxation although at the time some techniques (not all) may border on the uncomfortable. However, in certain situations such as pre and post event treatments the massage will typically be much lighter to either stimulate, relax or aid recovery.
Sometimes sports massage can be a little uncomfortable, but it is only ever a ‘good’ pain – that is you will instinctively know it is doing good. Please remember that you are always in charge, so if you’re uncomfortable in anyway please say and I will try a different approach! It is not unusual to feel a little post massage soreness for a day or two after a remedial massage. This is normal and shows that useful work was done – and that the body is healing! If you are worried in any way about being sore, or have an important event the next day or two, please do communicate this, it really is no problem to work around.
