There are 2 aspects to your question. One the kind of pot. A pot of whatever type does not cause its contents to deteriorate. Two the length of time that compost is in a pot does not cause it to become barren. I find that Terra Cotta pots are far more suited to successful growing than the modern plastic one, because it maintains a more constant temperature, Plastic heats/cools instantly. It maintains a moisture content stability, and the t/c pot will protect the roots from frost, plastic will not. The second aspect is, type of compost. There are composts for different things. John Innes No 2 compost is the generally used type for growing, and contains all the necessary nutients to maintain a healthy plant, there is no need for any other manure additives. As for the length of time compost is in a pot…I never empty my pots, I simply renew the top 6″ of compost in the pot, this feeds the new fibrous roots which which absorb the food for the plant.
