Does Sneads Ferry have alternatives to incorporation? What are these alternatives?
A- According to NC law, there are alternatives to incorporation: 1)THE COUNTY – Sneads Ferry could continue as they have been relying on Onslow County to protect and serve us. Onslow County is authorized to provide almost all of the services that a municipality may provide, except for street and sidewalk maintenance. Our county government also cannot protect us from annexation or ETJ, as it is in our states constitution that it is our neighboring cities and towns sovereign right to expand their corporate limits if they choose to do so. Onslow County has many other interests besides Sneads Ferry, such as Camp Lejeune and Jacksonville, who have a lot more power with our board of county commissioners than our little village. If Sneads Ferry continues to rely on Onslow County to fix our problems for us instead of taking control of our own destiny, then we will continue on the same course as the past 5-10 years – loss of waterfront, higher county taxes, continued development, and decline of
