Smoking: a) nicotine is a stimulant and increases the metabolic rate, so that your body burns(wastes) more calories b) suppresses appetite, so you don’t feel hungry and so eat less. Most chain smokers have very poor appetites. These are among the major reasons why most chain smokers are so skinny. And this is probably why your parents when they stopped smoking suddenly put on weight- their appetite increases and many people also experience a craving for sweet foods when they quit; plus the food they do consume isn’t just burnt off and gets converted to fat. Alcohol: Alcohol consumption by itself does not make you lose or gain weight, except perhaps in diabetics. As for the calories in alcohol argument, the body has to spend the same amount of energy to metabolize the alcohol. Added to the increase in metabolic rate and heat loss you get when consuming alcohol, the body actually loses energy. Heavy drinkers are often found to be obese, though again this may be related to poor lifestyle
