Does smoking cigarettes really cause lung cancer, or is it just a bad gene?
Smoking *highly* increases the risk that you will get the lung cancer. More you smoke, higher the risk increase. That being said, there are of course: a) people who smoke 40 cigarettes daily and never get the lung cancer b) people who are lifetime non-smokers and die of the lung cancer anyway. This is called a good/bad luck. It’s pretty much like there are criminals that never get caught (a) as well as innocent people who end up in jail due to miscarriage of justice (b). In other words, by smoking you are looking for trouble. With a bit of luck you will never get into it but keep in mind it is by no means a minor risk increase. We are talking about perhaps +1000% risk increase in strong smokers, not some measly +30% or so. Also it should be noted that lung cancer, especially NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer) variant, which is most common in smokers, has awfully high mortality rate, one of the highest of all kinds of cancer.
