Does smoking affect the chance of having a baby with IVF?
Research shows that if either partner smokes, the chances of having a baby through IVF or ICSI are reduced, compared to non-smoking couples of a similar age. In addition, smoking is associated with an increased risk of complications during pregnancy and early childhood. Deciding to try for a baby is therefore a good time to stop smoking and we strongly recommend that couples should stop smoking prior to starting IVF treatment. Please note that one of the criteria for being placed on the list for NHS funded IVF is that both partners should be non-smokers.
