Does sinus surgery need to be repeated?
Sometimes. In about five patients in one hundred, surgery needs to be repeated to complete the removal of blocked sinus passages, or more commonly, to remove repeated growth of polyps after surgery. Repeated sinus surgery is called revision sinus surgery. Revision surgery is more common is patients who have nasal or sinus polyps and in individuals who are overweight. As weight increases, many individuals develop nasal and sinus congestion. This congestion creates more bleeding during surgery, and may obscure the safe view required for detailed sinus surgery. Patients with sleep apnea also require revision sinus surgery more often.
