Does Serv-U work with Windows 95 and NT?
Serv-U” works very well with Windows 95 and NT. In fact, I’ve been running a server on Win95 which handled on average 400 clients per day total without a hitch. This would work for several weeks without restarting the server. Win95 is definitely recommended as a server platform for Serv-U, but there are several things to keep in mind: Win95 can only handle 256 sockets at the same time. In reality this means you’ll have to stay away quite a bit from that number to avoid any special effects. The average FTP session takes up two sockets, so I’d say that 40 concurrent FTP clients is about the safe maximum. Keep in mind that if you run other servers (WWW and so) they’ll use up sockets too. The other thing to know in Win95 is that there’s a bug in the kernel, causing it to slowly leak memory when lots of sockets are used. You can find a fix at Microsoft’s Web site. Of course, I’d recommend to use the 32-bit version of Serv-U for this environment. The story is similar for NT, many of the regi
