Does Section 504 pay for assistive technology?
Section 504 requires public schools to provide students with disabilities with a free appropriate public education and, in addition ensures that students with disabilities are afforded an equal opportunity to participate in school programs. For students with disabilities, this means that schools may need to make special arrangements so that these students have access to the full range of programs and activities offered. For example, a student who needs a wheelchair lift on a school bus to get to school must be provided with this technology. Other modifications which might be required under Section 504 include installing ramps into buildings and modifying bathrooms to provide access for individuals with physical disabilities. Even though required by the law, none of these types of modifications would be funded by Section 504.
