For several years, Anaheim Hills’ Chance Theater has enjoyed a nurturing relationship with South Coast Repertory, Orange County’s largest theater company. Oanh Nguyen, Chance’s artistic director, has worked on two productions at SCR, including a stint as associate director of its recent world-premiere staging of Julie Marie Myatt’s “The Happy Ones” last fall. This weekend, SCR embarks on a collaborative first: it will present Chance’s production of Wayne Lemon’s “Jesus Hates Me” on its Henry Nicholas Stage. Nguyen directs the play, which is a remounting of last year’s West Coast premiere at Chance’s home venue with the same cast. We talked to Nguyen recently about “Jesus Hates Me” and his theater’s evolving bond with SCR.
