Does SARCAN accept other containers, such as food tins, glass jars, and plastic containers?
No, SARCAN cannot accept such containers. SARCAN is contracted with the Government of Saskatchewan to recycle most non-refillable beverage containers, and funding and any related charges as a result of Government legislation (i.e., environmental handling charges) are tied to those legislated containers – SARCAN is funded for ¾ of its budget by the environmental handling charges on every beverage sold. Other containers (i.e., plastic margarine tubs, food tins, glass jars, laundry detergent bottles, etc.) are not legislated; therefore, SARCAN would be expected to cover the costs to recycle these products. As there currently is no market for such containers, SARCAN cannot recover the costs of recycling, so it cannot accept these products.
