Does salary increase depending on which grade you teach in elementary school?
In Ontario teachers unions are split by elementary (K-8) and secondary (9-12). There are differences between school boards, between unions (public/catholic), and between elementary and secondary, but there is no difference between grade levels within elementary or secondary. The things that affect your salary are your educational background and experience working with the board. All else being equal, a grade 2 teacher will earn the same as a grade 8 teacher. Hari – could you mention where you work? The question specifically stated Canada. I can’t speak for all of Canada but in Ontario there is no difference in terms of grade as long as it is elementary. A grade 1 teacher will earn as much as a grade 8 teacher given they are working for the same school board and they have the same amount of experience, educational background etc. The pay scale has 4 levels based on education and 10 levels based on years of experience. All teachers within a school board in elementary are on the same pay
