Does Sake require Kosher supervision to be consumed?
• ANSWER: According to the OU’s Alcohol Guidelines, Sake requires a reliable Kosher supervision to be imbibed. This is for three reasons: 1) Rice is cooked before it is marinated and therefore there are concerns with Bishul Akum. 2) The same vessels used to manufacture Sake can and often are used for non-Kosher (treif). 3) Emulsifiers are added as part of the manufacturing process for Sake. Emulsifiers are red-flag ingredients. However, the OU certifies a number of Kosher Sakes which can be found in our online Product Search.
