Does Ryne Sandberg feel that Sammy Sosa belongs in the Hall of Fame?”

Former Chicago Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg says Sammy Sosa doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame. Advertisement “I don’t think so,” the Hall of Famer told ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago on Tuesday. “Part of being in the Hall of Fame, they use the word integrity in describing a Hall of Famer, in the logo of the Hall of Fame, and I think there are going to be quite a few players that are not going to get in.” In the rules for election to the Hall, No. 5, states: Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played. The New York Times last week reported that Sosa was one of 104 players who tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug in an anonymous 2003 survey while he was with the Cubs. A congressional committee is looking into the allegations.

DETROIT — Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg told WMVP-AM 1000 that former teammate Sammy Sosa does not deserve to be elected into the Hall of Fame. “Part of being in the Hall of Fame, they use the word integrity in describing a Hall of Famer, in the logo of the Hall of Fame, and I think there are going to be quite a few players who are not going to get in,” Sandberg said Tuesday. Sandberg and Sosa were teammates during the 1990s, but Sosa didn’t appear to bulk up significantly until 1998, one year after Sandberg retired. Sandberg said he was “blinded” by Sosa’s doping and thought he simply was working harder in the off-season.
