Does Rwanda face a more possible genocide?
On Oct. 1, the United Nations released a report attributing genocide to Rwandan-backed militia acting in eastern Congo, an area where Hutu genocidaires fled in the aftermath of a Tutsi rebel victory in 1994. Reprisal attacks, including rape and attacks on civilians, the report states, were conducted by Tutsi-majority forces commanded by current Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Kagame, who has also been accused of running show elections to maintain power, is fiercely opposed by Paul Rusesabagina, the subject of the 2004 film “Hotel Rwanda.” Rusesabagina warns that the dictatorial policies of Kagame are threatening to undo the progress toward ethnic reconciliation in Rwanda, which, along with economic and infrastructural improvements, had once been attributed as a positive result of Kagame government policy.
