Does Rupert Murdoch have too much power in our media industries?
Yes. If politicians are too scared to challenge a media baron, he must be too powerful. Politicians at least in the UK aren’t just scared to challenge him, they actively do his bidding in the hope his outlets will support them at election time. Present Tory party media policy sounds like it has been written by Rupert’s own hand. Certainly everything they have mentioned is on his wish list (vice versa also appears to be true): an end to the obligation for broadcast news to be impartial, turning Ofcom (the media regulator) into a glorified post-office to rubber stamp requests by media outlets, downsizing the BBC and reviewing its funding (an organisation that means Rupert actually has to spend a small amount of money on content for his UK outlets as opposed to just charging a fortune for dumping his US content and spending no money at all)(see also next paragraph).
