Religion is a perversion of perception. It is not entirely clear whether the lack of mental stability in the religious is a consequence of religion, or the reason that religion is accepted in the first place.

I think it depends on the religion & individual. Religion probably does make some people crazy, while it makes other people saner. In my neighborhood near the inner city, for instance, poor homeless people sometimes turn to religion as an alternative to crack addiction and alcoholism and dangerous sex with prostitutes. I don’t know how “crazy” the new Christians (or Muslims) are, but some of them seem better at holding a job, staying away from substance abuse and avoiding street violence than their more atheistic brethren. The same is true for me, I think. I’m not Chlristian today, but my involvement in Christianity in high school and college helped to cure me of an obnoxious arrogance and a sense that I had to fight with half of the world because they supposedly resented my amazing superiority. Christianity (and some other influences) reminded me that I was just a human being like everybody else, and that it really is better to be friends with people than to fight them. That’s not cra

I believe in God but am against religion. Religion has been twisted and mangled to fit the beliefs and viewpoints of those who run it. I don’t need to sit inside some building and listen to someone preach to be close to God. Basically I see religion as a detriment to those who are searching for God.

No. Crazy people find religion and it perpetuates the problem. Religion can often make a mental problem worse but rationality is and has always been the cure. To get into a religion in the first place, the ability to be rational and think critically must be damaged in some significant way.
