Does red cordial make kids hyperactive?
There is no clear-cut answer to this question. While it seems that artificial colouring in liquids or foods will not produce hyperactive responses in the majority of children, there has been anecdotal evidence over many years that it does occur in some children. Hence, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and hyperactivity tendencies may show hyperactive responses if they consume red cordial or other liquids and foods containing artificial colourings. If this is suspected, then a trial to assess an individual child’s response can be undertaken when they are given a diet free of any artificial colourings for a number of days and then including such additives to assess their behavioural response. Such children, depending on their response, can be allowed to consume liquids and foods with such additives if there is no behavioural change. They may need them excluded from their diet if a hyperactive response occurs. – Dr. Brian Sando** • Does milk reduce the benefits of dr
