Does racism have any place in Australian politics?
Of course there is no place for racism in Australian politics, but I believe you may be mistaking “nationalism” with racism here. No matter where you go in this world, every country has right wing political leaders who secure support from the population who share their views. This is the benefit of democracy. You shouldn’t label citizens concerned about immigration or illegal people smugglers “racist” because I doubt that their opinion stems from racist attitudes at all. These political parties who you have mentioned have obtained a sizable share of the popular vote in elections because left-wing parties have refused to listen to voters legitimate concerns. Everybody wants to feel safe in their home country, I believe that’s a reasonable expectation.
