Does race and ethnicity play a role in who gives and receives cord blood?
Donors of racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to donate, because their blood is urgently needed. In order to have a successful transplant, the cord blood unit needs to match the recipient’s as closely as possible. Because tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone from the same ethnic or racial background.
