Does quitting smoking or never smoking cure lung cancer?
No. Quitting smoking (or never starting) is important for your overall health and the health of your lungs but it will not prevent you from getting lung cancer. Sixty percent of newly diagnosed lung cancer victims are former smokers or people who have never smoked cigarettes in their lives. Research shows that a significant risk of lung cancer remains for 20 or more years after you quit smoking. In addition, each year 20,000 – 25,000 people who have never smoked cigarettes are diagnosed with lung cancer – and these cases are on the rise.
