Does QAA produce league tables of UK universities, departments or courses?
QAA does not produce league tables. The UK values its diverse and adaptable higher education system. Universities and colleges offer a wide variety of programmes and courses1 to meet the needs of many different types of students. There are no centrally controlled course curricula, so it is difficult to compare the achievements of different institutions. This is why QAA’s external reviews assess each university/college or subject/discipline2 against its own aims and objectives. Some UK newspapers publish league tables, using information from many sources to rank universities and colleges. Users of these will need to be clear about the bases on which they are compiled, the origins of the data and the weightings given to the various elements from which the league tables are made up.
