It depends some bites and stings are alkaline and if you put an acid ie vinegar or lemon juice on them it neutralises the alkaline and stops them hurting. If you applied it to a bite or a sting that contained acid it would have no effect and then you should put on bicarbonate of soda which is an alkaline. If you are worried about the smell use a distilled vinegar as it smells less, It must be vinegar and not the disgusting non-brewed condiment.
