Does PSA Promote Prostate Cancer?
A novel theory proposed by the Life Extension Foundation in 2005 suggests that PSA may not only be a marker for prostate cancer, but that it might actually play a role in the progression and spread of this disease.20-24 This may occur because PSA is a serine protease that can digest the extracellular matrix surrounding cells, which may theoretically allow cancerous cells to better invade and spread into normal tissue structures. The Life Extension Foundation believes it is imperative for aging men to regularly obtain and track their PSA level, and take aggressive steps to reduce the negative effects of excess PSA upon the aging prostate.
