Does poetry have to rhyme? What is the basis of poetry?

NO….There is no "set" rule that poetry has to rhyme. In fact there are so many different FORMS of poetry out there that you can easily pick and choose or mix and match your desired flow at any given point in time. The content is the most important aspect of poetry or writing in general. I have had several people ask me to read their poetry and honestly, the fact that they attempted to hold themselves to rhyming actually harmed the overall outcome of the piece. The core of the poetry was there but ultimately it fell flat. The best way to teach yourself about the fundamentals of "good" poetry is to immerse yourself into the works of other popular writers.

My suggestions:

Robert Frost

Rod McKuen

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Edgar Allen Poe

My personal style of writing is my own and I choose to let the poetry flow to where it needs to….Electric Thoughts by Shethy Luve Stuckey

no it doesnt it has to ‘fit’ and sound right, it has to be true, what you feel the basis is honesty and emotions
