Does physical activity have a role in preventing and treating diabetic microvascular complications?
The Metabolic Health subcommittee used the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Scientific Database as its primary source of references for the topics covered in this section of the report (see Part F: Scientific Literature Search Methodology, for a full description of the Database). The Database contains studies published in 1995 and later. In its search, the subcommittee used broad study selection criteria, which included: all age groups; all study designs; all physical activity types as well as cardiorespiratory fitness; disease conditions including T2D, T1D, diabetic nephropathy/neuropathy/retinopathy, metabolic syndrome, gestational diabetes, hypoglycemia, glucose, and insulin. Studies were also identified through computerized searches of several databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, Health Plan, Cochrane Collaboration, and Best Evidence.
