Does Pakistan have a population planning programme?
Yes, we have a very active population planning programme. Pakistan is very actively trying to bring the population under control but there are many constraints for the government, culturally and technically. They have a National Policy for Population and it outlines the plan for what needs to be done, so the government is not rudderless. What are some of these constraints that the government faces? Personally I feel that our major problem in Pakistan is lack of education coupled with a very severe lack of respect for women. Women are only thought of in relation to being a wife, a mother, a daughter, or a sister. They dont even have an identity of their own which gives them the right to do things. No one values them and they themselves think of their value in relation to men. So the woman who has sons is valued far more than the woman who is childless even though the latter may be more empowered.
