Does Optic Neuritis Equal Multiple Sclerosis?
A 30-year-old female presents to her primary care physician with blurry vision in her left eye. She states it began 2 days ago, and since it hasn’t gone away, she thought it was important to seek medical attention. She describes her vision as having a blurry area over the center of her visual field, with some mild pain in her left eye with movement. The patient has no significant medical history except occasional migraines. The only medications she takes are oral contraceptives and she does not smoke. Review of systems is negative except for an episode of a “pinched nerve” in her left arm about 4 months ago which went away without any treatment. Physical examination is grossly normal. Examination of the eye reveals extra-ocular muscles to be intact. Visual fields are normal in breadth. Visual acuity is diminished in the left eye. Examination of the fundus reveals the following: The patient is referred to an ophthalmologist, who diagnoses her with optic neuritis. The patient has multipl
