So long as you don’t leave the airport (which is to say, you don’t need to clear customs), then no, you don’t need a visa. The international terminal of the airport is international territory.

On one of our trips to Africa we had a stopover for many hours in Amsterdam. We did not need anything to stay there. They have a place to put your luggage so you can travel around the city. You are very close to everything and I would suggest taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity. On the way to Africa and returning to the states from Africa – in Amsterdam — we did a boat tour and toured the Anne Frank House. Very poignant experience to actually see the rooms where she lived and the things on the wall. We walked around the red light district.– I had to see the girls in the windows. We did a tour of a wooden shoe factory, a windmill and a cheese factory. The airport is set up for tourists to travel by train to the city and tours. It was just wonderful. You will love the experience. The only thing we missed because it was the wrong time of the year was the tulips. That would be just beautiful to see. Have a safe trip. Happy travelling!

The need for visas anywhere depends upon what passport you hold (whihc country it is from) However if you are “in transit” and just connecting to an onward flight (you will stay within the airport and not actually enter the Netherlands) then you do not need a visa at that point.

Visa not required provided: – arriving and departing from/to a non-Schengen country and – continuing by same or first available aircraft to a third country; and – holding confirmed onward reservation and all documents required for next destination; and – not leaving the airport transit area. Your airline should be able to give you details about the availability of an “airport tranist area” for your itinerary. also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement#Entry_conditions_for_third-country_nationals for Schengen visa rules.
