Does Ohio University purchase mountaintop mined coal?
Ohio U does not directly purchase any coal mined through mountaintop removal. The coal purchased for heating and cooling comes from Sands Hill Coal Company in Hamden, Ohio, which practices strip mining. Some of the coal used to generate the electricity we purchase from AEP Ohio is mined through mountaintop removal. About 10% of the coal AEP buys each year comes from mountaintop removal mines, according to a 2005 statement by AEP spokesman Pat Hemlepp.
