New government rules were announced today that allow for a number of issues previously considered illegal and have huge impacts on companies like Apple. The Library of Congress’ Copyright Office has reviewed a number of policies and issues some new exemptions to copyright law. One of those being that it is now legal to “jailbreak” your phone to allow apps not approved by Apple to be featured on the phone. The one issue that caught my eye is an exemption that will allow people to break technical protections on video games to investigate or correct security flaws. This seems like one of those exemptions tailor made to allow people to say the homebrew channel is used exactly for that purpose and that Nintendo would be helpless to block its use in piracy going forward. Other new exemptions allow people to break the access controls of their phones in order to switch carriers and allow college professors the ability to break copy protections on DVDs in order to embed clips for educational pu
