Does neutering a puppy mellow -out his personality (GSD)?

Not in general. Neutering removes the source of testosterone – it will only stop or reduce sexually motivated behaviour. If your pup is under 6 months old he probably won’t be displaying this yet anyway – so if you get neutered before 6 or 7 months of age you probably won’t notice any difference. Neutering does not alter personalities, it merely stops mounting and roaming and some types of aggression – unless done later in life, in which case it doesn’t even stop these. Neutering is best done to stop your dog from gettgin testicular cancer or prostate problems later in life. It’s not a personality fixer – training is.

While neutering does not change personality it can help in mellowing a hyper dog. Some male puppies have excess energy due to hormones (especially if there is an un-spayed female within 2 miles). Neutering not only has great health benefits (such as decreased cancer risk) but can “take the edge off” of a young dog.
