Does nationality/ethnicity play a role in who develops breast cancer?
Yes. In the United States, Caucasian women are more likely than any other ethnic group to develop breast cancer (114 per 100,000) and American Indian women are least likely to develop breast cancer (33 per 100,000). African American women are slightly less likely (100 per 100,000) than Caucasian women to develop the disease and are followed by Asian/Pacific Islander women (75 per 100,000). Hispanic women are second only to American Indian women as least likely to develop breast cancer (69 per 100,000). However, Hispanic is not mutually exclusive from Caucasian, African American, Asian Pacific Islanders and American Indians (65). African American women: Compared to white women, African American women have a higher risk for developing pre-menopausal breast cancer and also of dying from the disease. Risk for postmenopausal breast cancer, however, is lower among African American women. Both the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the National Center for Human Genome Research (NCHGR) are co
