Does national team basketball drive the popularity of the game?
Yes it is more popular and we have a lot of responsibility. As the Spanish federation, as coaches, a lot of young people want to play basketball. Now we have to do the right job to coach them, to show them the right way and to educate them. What are some common mistakes you see young coaches make? Whenever I talk to young coaches I always say the same thing. If you teach something, teach it the right way. You don’t need to teach 10 things, maybe just four, but do it the right way. Let’s take it easy with young players and show them how to play, but make them love the game. Don’t overload them. Sometimes there are players who want to play when they are 12 but when they are 15 they don’t want to play any more. Because maybe they have a big choice of sports, not only basketball, so we have to show them how to love the game and sometimes that’s something I think a lot about.
