No. VRS does not require a black background in order to deskew an image. VRS is capable of deskewing an image based on content, regardless of the scanner background. You can check the VRS product pages at www.kofax.com for information on the background of your scanner. If you are using a VRS-certified scanner, Kofax has created specific settings for each scanner that match the background of the scanner and create the best possible image from the scanner. These settings are in use automatically when you select a VRS-certified scanner during installation.
