Does my five year old have a learning disability?
Hopefully she is going to suddenly catch on soon, but if learning remains that difficult, it is definitely a disability. Your daughter can still excel though. I don’t know of any shortcuts or better ways to teach her, except maybe specialized programs like RALP(see link below). It just takes time and patience. My brother was was very smart in most areas and we were baffled about why after two years of careful, loving effort, he couldn’t learn the ABC’s before starting kindergarten. When school started he was diagnosed with a learning disability. It was always very invisible to everyone but teachers. The school system put him in special ed much to my mothers dismay. Everyone else he ever met thought he was really smart. My mom spent a lot of time tutoring him as he went through school. In high school he wanted to take some mainstream classes that would qualify him to go to college. The school administrators refused saying he would fail. My mother asked if he would be willing to try even
This is not a problem at all if her speech progress is right on track. My daughter couldn’t retain what I teach her at home too and like you was worried coz she’s about to start school! But tell you what, that’s what school is for and those lovely teachers will have the right combination of stimulants to make her remember! 😀 my daughter now knows her ABC and anything to do with it. I attempted to teach her at home (she couldn’t also remember a few seconds later!) but apparently when I had a dialogue with her teachers, I found out that they taught the same subject matter differently — and it works better their way!! 😀 so relax, I’m definite she does not have a learning disability. If you really wanna teach her, reinforce her learnings by using the same technique done in school… just be consistent and be patient!!
