Does Monnet have plans to bid for merchant power plants?
Since Monnet is already implementing a IPP of 1,000 mw, we are not in a hurry to bid for other merchant power projects. However, we are keen to expand our capacities in power in future and the expansion could come through either by bidding for power projects or setting up green field projects. To what extent do ultra mega power project help overcome power shortages? Ultra mega power projects are a good long term strategy of the government to overcome power shortage in the country. However, my sense is that the whole concept of such power projects which are linked to coal mines will take a longer time to shape up and produce more power than envisaged. The government needs to be proactive in providing clearances for the mines and the power projects to ensure faster implementation. Allotment of a mine and bringing it to the stage of extracting coal is still a long journey in India in terms of clearances at the state and the central level.
